Established in 2013

Homebrews and Handgrenades, founded by owner Peter Tripp, is the culmination of a passion for homebrewing and an entrepreneurial spirit. What started as an interest in learning how to brew his own beer very quickly became more than just a hobby. With a friend to mentor him and a drive to understand how to brew quality beer, he became more and more refined as a homebrewer, enjoying trying new recipes and cloning some of his favorite craft brews. When a personal circumstance prevented him from being able to return to work in his profession as an Ironworker, he knew the time was right to pursue his newly found passion for beer full time and help others do the same. It was then the idea for Homebrews & Handgrenades was conceived.

Since then, Peter has completed the classes for the beer judge certification program. Through these classes he continued to further educate himself on all styles of beers, honing the ability to identify and correct flaws in beers, as well as judge beer in a more critical manner. He has since passed the online exam as well as become a recognized beer judge from taking the tasting test.

As the homebrewing and craft beer culture continues to thrive and grow on Long Island, Peter, along with other members of the homebrewing community, wanted to establish a community presence within Nassau County for homebrewers and craft beer enthusiasts. Together they formed a Nassau-based homebrew club that spawned from the monthly bottle swaps Peter hosts monthly at the shop. The Handgrenades Homebrew and Craft Beer Club was formed and is now registered with the American Homebrewers Association. The club’s mission is “To promote the craft beer culture on Long Island by supporting businesses and organizations with a craft beer focus while providing homebrewing education and social events to homebrewers and craft beer enthusiasts.” We accomplish this by:

1) Offering homebrewing clinics, classes, and brew days.

2) Hosting social events such as brewery trips, group attendance at tap takeovers, and bottle shares.

3) Helping support local businesses by attending events, promoting their businesses on our social media pages and hosting club meetings at their venues.

The club meets every third Tuesday of the month at various locations throughout Nassau County including Barrier Brewing in Oceanside, Black Sheep Ale House in .
